Your writing brings into focus what I think a lot of us already know deep down - we all have the ‘urge to reach’ for a variety of reasons. For me it’s probably because I want the feeling of ‘being on top of things’ of anticipating what’s next and making sure we’re safe as a family - all by doing our food shop ahead of time or by ordering something on Amazon. Ridiculous.

The quality of "being on top of things" is a great observation - I love that phrasing. And of course like so many things with the phone, much of it is entirely reasonable. These things do need doing. But I often find myself wondering whether they need doing NOW, and whether I was happier when they were compartmentalised.

The phone is always asking us.... are we on top of things? Are we?

Thank you. Reading this knowing that every 'a' meant a struggle with your keyboard, I felt your generosity with each word that contains one. And all of them resonate. I'm stopped by the thought of the phone as a teacher. Good phone use brings good things. Phones aren't bad in themselves; it's the way we've been tuned to use them addictively. I love reading your thoughts about ways we can resist that.
