Love the honesty. I've been in the email trap more often than I should, especially earlier in my career. It is not easy to get out of.

Thank you for saying so!

It really isn't, is it. I must say I got really curious about that too… not just why I do these things but why can't I stop, whatever I try? There's something about the phone which is endlessly fascinating psychologically.

I think you should give yourself a break. You took your son to a football class. You spending time with him. It's not psthologic for some of your attention divided. My hunch is that you are spending more time with your son than most fathers.

Thank you, that's kind of you to say!

I should write more about this in another piece, the experience of looking after kids with phones as opposed to interrogating what is going on in my head. There's a lot to unpack in terms of the effects in the moment, but for the most part I'm actually fairly sure that my children didn't lose out a great deal from it.

But I'm pretty sure I did. I'm fascinated by why exactly we do this. I can't speak for everyone, but looking back on it with the benefit of more reflection I'm definitely sure it's more interesting than "being bored".
