Yes! It’s a great book isn’t it! But it’s curious, ever since I read it, which was some time back now I’ve always wondered just why humans need all these little tricks. Why don’t we just do want we want to do?
It wasn’t until my weirdest moments in m meditation that I felt like I really got why. That I saw that the mind was very wedded to continuity, that keeping on going in the same direction was a huge and powerful current. And that changing that was way harder than we allow - one conscious thought to learn the guitar in one moment, is just a thought that comes and goes before we revert to continuity.
Also - yes - was too nice to Netflix there! I do think it’s likely that watching a great drama is better than scrolling TikTok. But they seem to be on a continuum to me.
That’s such a great way to describe it!! You really are a pro meditator, we can all learn from you!
Oh for sure, they’re different, watching something long and meaningful with a plot and character development that takes TIME to unfold is infinitely better. But still, a continuum is a good way to see it I think!
Reading Atomic Habits right now so this is perfect timing, got all excited when you mentioned the habit stacking 😁
Also, as a binge-watcher unless I control myself, I can confirm without any hesitation that Netflix/any such alternative is NOT harmless 😒
